Follow the order of operations;

**PEMDAS** or **BODMAS**

Step 1:

Parentheses or Brackets

Step 2:

Exponents or orders (such as powers, roots etc.)

Step 3:

Multiplication and Division (Do in order from left-to-right)

Step 4:

Addition and Subtraction (Do in order from left-to-right)

*Example 1:*

30 ÷ 5 x 3 + 2 – 1

= 6 x 3 + 2 – 1

= 18 + 2 – 1

= 20 – 1

= 19

*Example 2:*

18 – (2 × 3^{2} – 3)

= 18 – (2 x 9 – 3)

= 18 – (18 – 3)

= 18 – 15

= 3

**PEMDAS** or **BODMAS** are acronyms used to remember the order of operations in maths. The letters in each acronym stand as follows;

**PEMDAS**

**P** – Parentheses

**E** – Exponents

**M** – Multiplication

**D** – Division

**A** – Addition

**S** – Subtraction

**BODMAS**

**B** – Brackets

**O** – Orders

**D** – Division

**M** – Multiplication

**A** – Addition

**S** – Subtraction

‘**P**lease **E**xcuse **M**y **D**ear **A**unt **S**ally’ is an easy sentence to remember the order of the letters in **PEMDAS**.
