Follow the order of operations;
PEMDAS or BODMAS
Step 1:
Parentheses or Brackets
Step 2:
Exponents or orders (such as powers, roots etc.)
Step 3:
Multiplication and Division (Do in order from left-to-right)
Step 4:
Addition and Subtraction (Do in order from left-to-right)
Example 1:
30 ÷ 5 x 3 + 2 – 1
= 6 x 3 + 2 – 1
= 18 + 2 – 1
= 20 – 1
= 19
Example 2:
18 – (2 × 32 – 3)
= 18 – (2 x 9 – 3)
= 18 – (18 – 3)
= 18 – 15
= 3
PEMDAS or BODMAS are acronyms used to remember the order of operations in maths. The letters in each acronym stand as follows;
PEMDAS
P – Parentheses
E – Exponents
M – Multiplication
D – Division
A – Addition
S – Subtraction
BODMAS
B – Brackets
O – Orders
D – Division
M – Multiplication
A – Addition
S – Subtraction
